RF, Gauss or All-in-One: Which Type Do You Actually Need?
“EMF” covers several distinct fields, and each needs a different sensor. The WHO’s electromagnetic fields overview separates them the same way:
Radiofrequency (RF) — the wireless world
WiFi routers, phones, Bluetooth, smart meters and mobile masts all transmit RF (roughly 100 kHz–6 GHz for consumer signals). An RF meter is the tool for anything wireless — and it’s the only meter type that can verify RF shielding products like bed canopies, window film or phone cases. If your concern is “the router, the phones, the neighbours’ WiFi, the mast down the road,” you want RF.
Magnetic fields (ELF) — wiring and appliances
Household electricity at 50/60 Hz creates extremely-low-frequency magnetic fields around wiring, breaker panels, transformers and motors — fields a Gauss meter measures in milligauss (mG). RF shielding does nothing against these, and an RF meter can’t see them. Electric fields — the third leg
Voltage on cables and devices creates electric fields even when no current flows — the field a lamp cord emits while switched off. They matter mostly within arm’s reach, e.g. wiring behind a headboard.

The 60-Second Shielding Test
- Baseline: hold your RF meter where you sleep or sit. Note the reading while your usual devices are active (start a video call on your phone for a worst-case source).
- Shield: add the product — close the canopy, fit the case, apply the film.
- Re-measure in the same spot, same devices. The difference is your real reduction — in your home, not a lab.
Two tips: measure at the same distance both times (RF drops sharply with distance, which can fake a “result”), and expect readings to bounce — modern signals pulse, so watch the peak value, not the flicker.
What the Readings Mean — Without the Panic
A meter will show you fields everywhere; that’s normal, not an emergency. Regulatory limits from the FCC and ICNIRP sit far above typical household readings. On the health science: IARC classified RF fields as Group 2B — “possibly carcinogenic” — in 2011, based on limited evidence around heavy phone use and glioma; a large WHO-commissioned systematic review published in 2024 found no clear link between mobile phone use and brain cancer.
